Carmelites in Kenya

The first Kenyan Carmelites joined the Order in Spain in the late 1990s and studied for the priesthood in Madrid and Barcelona. However, there was soon a move to go Kenya itself and make a foundation. Through the generosity of the Upper German Province and its own mission in India it was possible to send three friars to Nairobi with a view to building a house for novices and students and eventually a parish church. The friars finally settled in the diocese of Ngong, on the outskirts of Nairobi and began their projet of faith. In 2005 with the help of many benefactors in Germany and elsewhere, the student house was opened. Almost immediately, the friars began constructing a church and parish hall on the site of an older mission station. It is in the building of the parish hall that the Society of the Little Flower was able to make a significant contribution.
