On 17th September 2019, Fr. Míċéal O'Neill O.Carm. was elected as Prior General to succeed Fr. Fernando Millan Romeral, O. Carm who stands down after twelve years in the post.  Fr. Míċéal is a member of the Irish Province and joined the order in 1971.  He has been in many ministries within the Order, including service in Latin America and most recently as Prior of the Carmelite International Study House in Rome.  

The other new members of the Council are:

Vice Prior General: Fr. Benny Phang Khong Wing, O.Carm

Procurator General: Fr. Michael Farrugia, O.Carm.

Over the past 6 years Fr Benny, from the Indonesian Province, has served as the General Councillor for Asia, Australia & Oceania. Fr Michael, from the Maltese Province, was re-elected as Procurator General - the Order's Canon Lawyer and liaison with the Holy See. Fr Christian, from the German Province, has served the past 6 years as Vice Prior General and has been elected to a new role as Bursar General for the Order.

The four Councillors for the regions are:

Fr Conrad Mutizamhepo was re-elected as the General Councillor for Africa.  Fr Conrad is from Zimbabwe (a mission of the Irish Province).

The General Councillor for the Americas is Fr Luis Maza Subero, a Venezualan friar of the Catalonian Province where he is currently Prior Provincial.

Fr Robert Thomas Puthussery from the Indian Province of St Thomas is the General Councillor for Asia, Australia & Oceania.


The General Councillor for Europe is Fr Richard Byrne, of the Irish Province where he is currently Prior Provincial.
